About

Hello and welcome to The Mad Potter!  The name of my studio is actually created from my initials, Michelle A Davies, I'm not really all that "mad".  Well, maybe a little, but we're all a little mad, aren't we?

I started my art career with a degree in Commercial Art.  When my children were small I scratched my creative itch with quilting.  I designed and sold several quilt patterns ( and won a contest or two) with my efforts.

I also spent time as a professional photographer.  I photographed countless high school seniors and weddings. I also spent time as the Photo Editor for our city's leading newspaper.  I covered everything from sky-high jet refueling to presidential candidates stopping in our city.

During all those avenues of creativity, I was always drawing, always painting.  At some point in all that art work, I needed a new watercolor palette.  I researched and decided that the best way to get what I wanted was to make my own.  Now here we are.  Years later and I've got a pottery studio complete with a kiln, a wheel, hundreds of pounds of clay, and an endless curiosity about what I can do with it all.

In clay I have finally found the answer to the questions I've always asked:  how can I be creative while also making something useful?  I strive for the perfect balance of beauty, humor, and functionality when creating.  I also leave room for laughter.

I hope in my creations that I can bring a smile to your face as you sip your morning coffee.  That the mug you reach for time and again gives you the perfect start to your day.  The gift you lovingly chose for your best friend conveys the value of your friendship.  That I can bring to your day a little bit of creativity, color and a touch of wonder in what can be created from a lump of clay.
